The communications advisor is responsible for providing communications support for port authority projects, programs and initiatives. This involves researching, drafting and finalizing briefing notes, reports and other corporate materials under the direction of the manager, and with the input and approval of members of project or program-specific teams. The communications advisor recommends strategic measures to enhance clarity and reach of relevant information and creates content to support business objectives and increase awareness of the organization’s goals and initiatives, as applicable. As assigned, the communications advisor carries out work in support of overall communication objectives, including but not limited to public engagement and awareness, issues management, media relations and government affairs, in coordination with other strategic communications team members and activities.

This role will:

  • Create strategic content to support business objectives and increase awareness of the organization’s goals and initiatives among government, program partners and other stakeholders, as well as the general public
  • Research, draft and finalize high quality and strategic corporate materials
  • Work with other departments and subject matter experts to ensure information is up-to-date and presented in clear, relatable language
  • Support communications and stakeholder engagement activities, including participating in or facilitating stakeholder meetings and other events related to port authority-led projects
  • Support the implementation of strategies, plans and tactics in relation to communications and community engagement for port authority-led projects, programs and initiatives, as required
  • Analyze information, data and statistics regarding media requests, coverage and interviews
  • Support the implementation of strategies, plans and tactics in relation to communications and community engagement for port authority-led projects, programs and initiatives, as required
  • Support media relations activities and recommend proactive media strategies including suggested pitches for news stories to the media to profile specific initiatives, and identifies opportunities for appropriate media coverage
  • Represent the port authority by attending and participating in meetings with project or program teams and external stakeholders
  • Perform other assigned duties as required

 

The successful candidate will have a university degree in communications, journalism, political science, or another acceptable degree, along with a minimum four years of experience of strategic communications in a public relations agency or corporate environment, including providing strategic advice, supporting media relations activities, and leading the development and execution of communication plans. Must have excellent writing and editing skills, with knowledge of Canadian Press standards. Must have proficiency in MS Office. Adobe experience is considered an asset.

 

This position is ideal for a self-motivated individual with an excellent command of the English language and effective writing, editing and story-telling skills with an ability to synthesize complex information from diverse sources into simplified language for a range of internal and external audiences. This person will have strong critical thinking, problem-solving and time-management skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization and manage multiple tasks under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Must be a team player who demonstrates professionalism and tact and can liaise effectively.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office conditions with some evening, weekend and off-site work. Flexibility to occasionally respond to issues during non-working hours.
