Champion the positive stories of public education in Vancouver
You are a senior communications professional with significant experience handling challenging issues and crises while concurrently executing a comprehensive proactive communications strategy aimed at showcasing positive stories. Under the direction of the Superintendent and the Manager, Strategic Communications and Public Affiars, you will lead the strategy and implementation of our internal and external communications initiatives. As the district’s media spokesperson and chief issues management advisor, the district and school based staff will rely on your expertise to navigate frequent and challenging public issues.
You will also oversee the district’s marketing and public engagement initiatives. You will manage a small team of professionals and work closely with the Board Chair, senior management, partner groups, staff, and students to ensure they remain actively engaged. At the same time, you will need to collaborate with school-based staff, community partners, the media, government and other agencies to ensure the positive messages, stories and initiatives of Vancouver public schools receive the attention they deserve.
You have a minimum of ten years of experience in public relations and have led communications in a similarly complex organization, ideally in the public sector. Your well-developed political acumen will support you as you address communication challenges in our fast-paced and complex district. You have strong knowledge of print, broadcast and digital media and experience managing and inspiring a small team of communications professionals to implement a wide-range of communications and marketing strategies. In addition to excellent writing, editing and verbal communication abilities, you also have great interpersonal skills and can work effectively with colleagues in stressful situations and on tight deadlines. An ideal candidate will also bring some social media, digital, photography and video production experience.
