To prepare and support an inclusive, caring community of learners for the challenges of a changing tomorrow.

The Burnaby School District is one of the largest, most progressive and diverse urban districts in the province.  The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities.  The District enrolls 24,000 students (K-12) and employs 4,000 dedicated employees who are committed to providing all students with a wide variety of innovative, high-quality programs to ensure student achievement in areas that include academics, athletics, trades training, visual and performing arts, social responsibility and leadership. The District also provides lifelong learning opportunities to more than 16,000 adult learners through an established Community & Continuing Education Program.

Burnaby Schools is seeking a strategic, results-driven, and experienced Communications Manager to join its team. In this position, you will provide key leadership within our team as you plan and execute communication initiatives with the District’s overall goals in mind.

As a Communications Manager, you will report to and work closely with the Superintendent to ensure the Board of Education, senior management team, stakeholder groups, District staff and students are all actively engaged. In addition, you will work with school-based staff, community partners, media, government and other agencies to ensure the positive messages, stories and initiatives of the Burnaby School District receive the attention they deserve.

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools and Secretary Treasurer, you will manage the development, implementation, and analysis of innovative and strategic communication plans to support the District’s mission, values and objectives with the goal of enhancing the work of our governance, business, and service operations. You will also be accountable for strategic writing support of complex and sensitive information for internal and external stakeholders, including the planning, coordinating, writing and editing of news releases, reports, presentations, speeches and other publications.

You have a minimum of five to seven years of experience in public relations, crisis communication, and general employee/stakeholder communications in a similar organization, ideally in the public sector. Your well-developed political acumen will support you as you address communication challenges in our fast-paced and complex District. You have strong knowledge of print, broadcast and digital media and are a hands-on manager who has the ability to get across a message, set goals, and meet objectives. In addition to excellent writing, editing and verbal communication abilities, you also have well-developed leadership abilities and interpersonal skills and can work effectively with colleagues in high-pressure situations and under tight deadlines.

If you have the following qualifications, are an advocate for public education and knowledgeable about the issues facing school boards today, we welcome your application.
