Mentorship Programs

Meet Your Match: IABC/BC Speed Mentoring

This program matches mentees up with mentors for a one hour session. Matched mentors and mentees arrange to meet once within a two week period (March 7th to 21st). The commitment is only one hour and there is no obligation beyond that.

This program is for communicators who:

  1. want to be introduced to mentoring in a small way
  2. want to see what it is like to mentor before committing to the full program
  3. believe in mentoring, but are fully committed and can only give a bit of time

For Mentees this is an opportunity to tap into the expertise of an experienced communicator. Mentees should think about what sort of career information they are seeking and what questions they would like to ask the mentor. These questions can be shared in advance of the face-to-face meeting.

For Mentors, this is an opportunity to listen, share your wisdom, and help a communicator as they progress in their career.

The program runs for a two week period from March 7th to 21st.

Program Requirements:

  • Mentees: a brief bio and a one or two sentence description about what you would like out of the speed mentoring session.
  • Mentors: a brief bio and what type of advice and area of expertise you can offer a mentor.

Deadline to apply:
February 24.

2011 — 2012 Mentoring Program

Welcome to the IABC Mentoring Program class of 2011-2012. This year’s class has 21 mentor/mentee matches. The program was officially launched at a kick-off event held at the Shebeen Club on November 2nd where both mentors and mentees had a chance to meet each other and learn more about the program. This year’s program is being led by Catherine Ducharme and a dedicated Mentorship Committee.

In the coming weeks we’ll explore how we can expand mentoring pairs to the regions.  As well, in early 2012 we will introduce a “speed mentoring” program to let people sample the experience. It will run over a two-week period. Stay tuned on that front!

This year the Mentorship program has a few different social media tools that will allow mentors and mentees to connect and share their experiences.

  1. Mentorship Blog – This blog site will provide a place for mentors and mentees to post comments, share stories, access resources and stay up-to-date with the current program information.  Some of the resources on the blog site include:
    • Mentorship toolkit and other resources
    • Articles and skills development tips
    • A list of the matches and pair care representatives
  2. IABC/BC Mentorship Subgroup – If you are on LinkedIn, you can join the IABC/BC Mentorship Subgroup to connect with other mentors/mentees in this year’s program and from last year’s program.

Testimonial:

“I felt so energized after meeting my mentor and I have to say the mentorship team did a fabulous job at finding my match. Our personalities really jived and I feel as though I can learn a lot him in the coming year. Having to sit down and dig deep for short-term and long-term career goals was a rewarding challenge that has helped me envision a clearer path for success. I look forward to working through my goals with a seasoned communications professional.”
