PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Advisor will play a key role in creating and
implementing communication strategies and plans to achieve Cowichan Tribes’ communications objectives. The
Communications Advisor will work with departments across the organization and contribute to a variety of
internal, external, digital, and print communications. This is a full-time permanent position that works primarily in
the office, with some local travel required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the
probationary period. The position includes paid professional development, paid vacation and paid sick leave.
Depending on experience, the position starts at $38.31 – $40.65 per hour ($69,717.81 – $73,975.70 annually).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement effective communication strategies and plans that build relationships with
community, enhance organizational awareness and reputation, and increase audience reach and impact
- Collaborate with and provide expertise to Cowichan Tribes departments and programs to: navigate
communications processes, create and implement communications campaigns, develop accurate content,
schedule and track in the communications calendar
- Create marketing and promotional materials, research, draft, and edit a variety of digital/print documents,
including correspondence, newsletter content, surveys, and publications, such as the annual report
- Curate social media/app content, schedule posts, and monitor platforms and mobile applications
- Provide support for the current and future versions of the Cowichan Tribes website, including: content
development and updates, online forms, and performance tracking
- Provide internal communications support, including promoting employee events and developing content for
the employee newsletter
- Provide communications support for community engagement and self-governance initiatives
- Track and evaluate performance of communications and media campaigns and use data to inform future
strategies and decision-making
- Ensure communication materials are consistent with approved brand guidelines
- Promote cultural protocols, teachings, and support the revitalization of the Hul’q’umi’num’ language through
communication initiatives and strategies
- Provide support for department administration, special projects, and events, and as needed, act in place of
the Communications Manager
- Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all corresponding documents)
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or another relevant field
- Minimum three years’ related work experience preferred

- An equivalent combination of related education (i.e. diploma), training, or other qualifications and experience
will be considered
- Demonstrated experience implementing communications strategies and plans
- Experience using computer software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, desktop
publishing, and marketing materials
- Experience using digital communications, web and mobile applications, and social media platforms and
analytics for public relations purposes
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check required
- Experience working in a First Nations community considered an asset
- Valid BC Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle required
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, digital marketing platforms, mobile applications,
and other related software, including creating digital forms and surveys
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms, website content management systems (CMS) and analytics
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with staff,
community and partners
- Excellent research skills and strong attention to detail,
- Strong resourcefulness and problem-solving, curiosity, keen to develop new skills and try new ways of
achieving desired outcomes
- Basic photography, video editing, and/or graphic design skills considered an asset
- Ability to travel locally and attend after hours meetings/events, as required
- Knowledge and understanding of Cowichan culture, Hul’q’umi’num’ language and traditions or a willingness
to learn is an asset
