Government and Media Relations Advisor

Our Government and Media Relations department (Public Affairs) is looking for a Government and Media Relations Advisor to join our team. In this role, you'll respond media enquiries, support the organization's media strategy, and support the issues management and government relations functions.

 

You'll be joining our Government and Media Relations team which works to build and strengthen relationships with government and media and strives to support an organization that makes a difference to the workers and employers of British Columbia.

 

This is a temporary role for 18 months.

 

How you'll make a difference: You'll build the understanding and trust that helps WorkSafeBC serve people across B.C.

 

Where you'll work

WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

 

In this role, you'll work primarily from your B.C. home and in our Richmond office once a month.

 

  • Liaise with senior departmental staff, as well as staff throughout our organization, to ensure external communications are accurate and consistent with our strategic direction
  • Develop briefing notes, news releases, media advisories, backgrounders, fact sheets, and key messages
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with external stakeholders; in particular, with key media and government stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain targeted media lists, create media summaries, oversee proactive media efforts and analyze media output, as required
  • Track media efforts and enquiries and create reports as required.

 

We're looking for someone who can:

  • Clearly and concisely present and explain technical information, verbally and in writing in plain language, to audiences with varying levels of understanding and information needs
  • Work with senior internal stakeholders to provide timely, accurate, informed and contextual responses to media queries.
  • Independently plan, organize and prioritize multiple projects and tasks to meet departmental and organizational deadlines and goals
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external clients by putting them at ease, responding courteously, and providing solid advice and consultation
  • Apply understanding of BC's political and media landscapes to inform both reactive and proactive media initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with media contacts

 

Your background and experience

  • A bachelor's degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, political science or a similar discipline
  • A minimum of six years of experience in the following: field of communications, media relations, journalism or government relations
  • Experience in media relations
  • Experience in issues management
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • We'll consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Successfully meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Review Act to work with children and/or vulnerable adults.

Our benefits
