Description

The UBC Learning Exchange was established in 1999 and pursues its mandate by providing a place in the community where UBC students and faculty, and Downtown Eastside (DTES) residents and organizations connect, pursue common interests and learn from each other with the long-term goal of bringing about social change. At its DTES premises, the Learning Exchange offers a unique learning environment, supporting key components of UBC's strategic plan. The Learning Exchange acts as a hub in three interrelated areas: 1/ providing free community-based programs for residents and organizations, primarily in the DTES; 2/ facilitating student experiential learning on site and in some community partner organizations in the DTES, in collaboration with faculty; and 3/ supporting community-based research and knowledge exchange activities, in partnership with researchers and DTES organizations.
The Learning Exchange is a Canadian leader in the field of community-university engagement and a signature program for the portfolio of VP External Relations.
The Communications Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the Learning Exchange establishes and maintains strategic communications to inform and engage the university's faculty, students and staff; and DTES community members, patrons of the Learning Exchange programs, and DTES community organizations. With multiple audiences, this role will support the delivery of strategic, timely, informative, two-way communication to a diverse range of groups.
The Communications Specialist will report to the Manager, Operations for the Learning Exchange. The role will work closely with all members of the Learning Exchange team, as well as communications colleagues from across the university.
This role is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of unit level faculty and staff communications initiatives, aligned with UBC's strategic plan and the priorities of the External Relations implementation plans to reach the University's strategic objectives. This new role will establish the potential of an embedded communicator at the Learning Exchange.
