It’s a pivotal time to join the Vancouver Coastal Health (“VCH”) Communications team. As we move past year two of the pandemic, there is increasing importance on mental health in our communities. We have an immediate vacancy for a Communications Leader – Special Projects to support the launch of an integrated mental health awareness campaign for children and youth.

The Communications Leader – Special Projects will oversee the development and implementation of an integrated awareness campaign that addresses the stigma of mental health, encourages children and youth to talk about their feelings and empowers families with the tools to help their loved ones. The campaign will engage stakeholders—from staff and medical staff to patients, clients and partners—so they are aware of the tools and resources available to support children and youth and can recognize when they need help. As part of this campaign, the Communications Leader – Special Projects will also be responsible for establishing and leading a group of university students through a co-op program, representing themselves as ambassadors of VCH in the community at school events, festivals, etc.

The Leader is a resourceful, creative, and customer-focused individual capable of seeing the big picture and yet not shy about rolling up his/her sleeves to work shoulder-to-shoulder with team members to implement tactics and meet deadlines. The Leader should be a dynamic self-starter capable of prioritizing competing deadlines, able to connect the dots between the various teams involved in this campaign and confidently deliver sound communications advice.

While leading VCH’s children and youth mental health awareness campaign is the primary accountability for this role, the successful candidate may be asked to support other similar communications initiatives at VCH as workload permits

 

 

As a Communications Leader with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Lead the development and implementation of VCH’s children and youth mental health awareness campaign while working with an integrated team across VCH including Mental Health & Substance Use, Public Health, Corporate Communications, Digital Communications, etc
  • Manage creative agencies and other consultants as needed to ensure alignment to program deliverables.
  • Be accountable for establishing and overseeing a co-op program to support the campaign in the community at school events, festivals, etc.
  • Provide overall leadership and direction to team members using effective management techniques (e.g. coaching, mentoring, skills and leadership development, performance management).
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Support other projects and performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline, particularly communications or marketing
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of previous communications and project management experience, preferably within large, multidisciplinary organizations, or an equivalent combination of education, training, experience.
  • Experience in health care and/or other public sector organizations is desirable.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Makes independent decisions using analytical and problem solving skills while remaining calm, alert and high-functioning in stressful situations.
  • Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of complex health care operations, and VCH goals and objectives to deliver strategic communications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with change management.
  • Applies and shares strategic knowledge about organizational culture and operational priorities to build partnerships, understanding and advance quality improvement.
  • Uses broad knowledge of the social, political and economic environment in the provision of strategic advice to stakeholders across VCH relating to government, community and media communications.
  • Applies solid knowledge of best practice business methods to help advance corporate culture, executive communications, executive engagement with frontline staff, corporate business practices and online and in-person communications.
  • Uses advanced skills and experience in journalistic and business writing, as well as the skill to develop compelling written and multimedia presentations to target and engage a variety of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
