Position Status: Full-Time Regular

Invest Vancouver, the Metro Vancouver region’s economic development leadership service, is seeking to hire a Public Relations Advisor.  The Public Relations Advisor will create content, develop media relations strategies, and lead strategic communications projects to support Invest Vancouver’s mission to advance broadly shared prosperity for all residents of the region.

Your research and writing skills are applied to advance strategic outcomes and you are motivated to share Invest Vancouver’s content with domestic and global audiences.

The Invest Vancouver Advisor, Public Relations reports to the Vice President, Collaboration and falls within our Professional / Technical, Level 2 job family.  

 

This role:

  • Responsible for creating and implementing communications strategies that support the mission of Invest Vancouver to advance equitable opportunity and more broadly shared prosperity for all residents of the region.
  • Develops and implements media relations strategies to increase awareness of Invest Vancouver’s announcements, content and activities and, to promote the Metro Vancouver region to domestic and global audiences.
  • Generates content and translates complex research and data products into compelling and branded documents tailored for specific audiences, including material for the Invest Vancouver website, newsletter, and social media. Plans, drafts, edits, and publishes public facing deliverables (e.g., documents, reports, op-eds, presentations, videos, brochures, signage, digital media copy, press releases, speeches) to expand Invest Vancouver’s influence in order to promote the Metro Vancouver region to a global audience, and advance economic development and investment attraction priorities.
  • Advances complex communication projects, working across teams and with consultants and other external partners to produce high quality deliverables. Components of work include formulating project scope and budget; developing implementation phases; advancing procurement processes; monitoring activities and project performance; and reporting to the Boards and various Committees on project outcomes and results.
  • Manages updates and redesigns of the Invest Vancouver website, and is responsible for producing regular newsletters and other communication products.
  • Identifies and tracks key performance indicators and prepares reports relating to work plans, post-campaign media performance, website analytics. Analyzes and reports on the effectiveness of communication strategies and adjusts as required.
  • Leads media relations and targeted engagement initiatives, identifying and cultivating strong relationships and collaboratively advancing work with internal and external stakeholders, including public and private sector partners, First Nations, and media outlets.
  • Effectively articulates and champions the Invest Vancouver brand and story, leading the editorial process to ensure consistency and adherence to brand standards. Coordinates content updates on website and digital assets.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

To be successful, you have:

  • 5 years of recent, related experience supplemented by a university degree in communications, business, political science, international relations, or other relevant discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Accreditation in Business Communications (ABC), International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) and/or Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM) are considered an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques relating to the development and implementation of communication strategies. Demonstrated ability to plan, create and coordinate domestic and international communications campaigns, activities, programs and projects from concept to final product.
  • Demonstrated experience in copywriting: developing, preparing, editing and finalizing documents, reports, publications, presentations, videos, press releases, speeches, brochures, signage and other communications and marketing materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations: creating media relations strategies, writing media releases, executing media launches and releases, support staff prepare for interviews, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective listening skills. Superior business writing skills including the ability to draft non-routine correspondence and creative, engaging copy. Highly detail-oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with internal and external contacts; applies team effectiveness skills and contributes to the achievement of team goals.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrates a high level of initiative.
  • Ability to provide professional advice and guide clients on a range of issues pertaining to communications and media relations.
  • Strong analytical, interpretation and research skills and demonstrates a high degree of integrity, professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to meet timelines and objectives and demonstrates persistence to overcome obstacles.
  • Learned experiences working with Indigenous Peoples is considered an asset.
  • Ability to use sound independent judgment in adapting and applying procedures to address and resolve unusual or problem situations; ability to analyze complex issues and provide strategic input.
  • Ability to direct the work of consultants, other eternal partners and staff assigned to complex projects as required.
  • Proficiency and familiarity with social media management platforms, email marketing tools, and search engine optimization tools. Awareness of graphic creation tools, conversion optimization tools, and social listening tools. Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
