Description

Consistently ranking amongst the top 20 public universities and the best 40 public and private universities in the world, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching. UBC’s spirit has embraced innovation and challenged the status quo since 1915. With two main campuses (Vancouver and Okanagan) located on the traditional territories of the Musqueam Coast Salish and Okanagan peoples, UBC’s entrepreneurial perspective encourages students, staff and faculty to challenge convention, lead discovery and explore new ways of learning. Bold thinking is given a place to define ideas that change the world at UBC.

A rare opportunity exists for a senior communications leader to provide key strategic leadership and advice on UBC’s media relations, issues management and crisis communications. As a key advisor and counsellor to the President and senior university officials, you will be called upon to utilize your strategic skills, foresight and judgement to enhance the UBC’s reputation amongst internal and external stakeholders. Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President, Communications, you will ensure UBC leaders and faculty are prepared to deal with media, direct the implementation of all news media strategies and act as spokesperson for the University on critical reputational issues.

You are a senior communications professional with at least 10 years of experience in developing key messages to a broad range of audiences inside and outside a large and complex organization. Creative and detail-oriented with an acute understanding of various business and media writing styles, including social media platforms, you have an innate ability to approach sensitive issues plus create and manage communication strategies. Your demonstrated leadership qualities are complemented by strategic planning expertise, a hands-on approach, and proven consultative and interpersonal competencies. It is imperative that your writing and editing skills are superb. In addition to management proficiency, this position requires a unique combination of expertise with crisis management, issues management, and media relations. It is suited to an individual who has great energy, creativity and integrity, and is thoroughly committed to the core values of higher education.
