Senior Media Relations and Public Affairs Advisor

Communications and Education

British Columbia Securities Commission

Centrally located in downtown Vancouver, the British Columbia Securities Commission administers the Securities Act. Our mission is to foster fair and efficient capital markets and a competitive securities industry. We are an independent agency accountable to the legislature and the public through the Minister of Finance.

You will be part of a team of communicators who provide a wide variety of communications services to the Commission. You are an experienced strategist who will provide strategic media relations and issues management advice to the Director, Communications and Education and be responsible for overseeing a comprehensive media and public affairs strategy.  You are a seasoned and skilled communicator with the ability to respond quickly, identify emerging issues and manage complex issues.  You will be directly involved in day-to-day media relations, public affairs activities, and various aspects of internal communications and the investor education program. Your ability to draft press releases and communications materials, and write in plain language about securities related subjects is as important as your ability to support a wide variety of communications projects.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A degree in Communications, Public Relations and/or Journalism or post degree certification in one of these fields
  • Ten or more years of experience in media relations and public affairs
  • Excellent media relations skills
  • A keen understanding of government and how it works
  • Business writing experience
  • Excellent knowledge of computers and automated office systems in a Windows environment including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, team player when engaging in this demanding work. In addition, an understanding of the financial services industry or working in a regulatory environment, and experience working in a public relations agency would be an asset.  Completion of the Canadian Securities Course is an asset.

We offer a challenging and rewarding work environment, and a competitive compensation package that includes a defined benefit pension plan, four weeks of vacation, and a full range of benefits.
