The BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) has an immediate, full-time employment opportunity for a Marketing and Communication Specialist. The Marketing and Communication Specialist is responsible for gathering, producing and distributing news and compelling fact-based information about the water sector and the BC Water and Waste Association (BCWWA) to our members, water utility leaders and others that make decisions about water services. This role is integral to positioning the BCWWA as the “go-to” source of water sector information for water professionals. The other key facet to the role is integrating, automating and analyzing data from our online marketing and member communication activities; an aptitude and curiosity for technology and data is necessary. Other responsibilities include developing, implementing and evaluating the results of marketing and communication plans that promote participation in BCWWA programs and services to various customer groups. The Marketing & Communication Specialist works closely with the CEO, program delivery staff, contractors, volunteers/subject matter experts, members, and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, write, graphically design, and distribute compelling online and social content, e-newsletters, publications, media releases, advertisements, and information packages, tailored to communicate effectively with different audience groups and motivate action. Including but not limited to:
    • Website – Write, edit and organize content, ensure brand consistency and compliance with relevant legislation, manage the site map, identify performance targets, and measure success.
    • Quarterly Watermark magazine – Maintain an annual editorial plan, solicit content, write and/or edit articles, proof layouts, provide direction and feedback to the publisher, and manage the distribution list.
    • E-newsletters – Maintain an editorial calendar, collect content, write and/or edit content, manage distribution lists, ensure compliance with relevant legislation, identify performance targets and measure success.
    • Social media – Maintain an editorial calendar for each platform (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter), identify performance targets and measure success.
    • Annual Membership & Buyers' Guide – Create an editorial outline for each edition, write and/or edit content, proof layouts, provide direction and feedback to publisher, and manage the distribution list.
    • Emails – Develop, improve, and analyze automated membership renewal, retention and engagement emails.
  • Build, maintain and manage collaborative relationships with members, subject matter experts, and relevant external organizations to support program marketing and gain access to timely information about the water sector.
  • Develop, manage implementation and evaluate marketing and communication activities for the Association to increase revenue, build positive brand recognition and communicate the value proposition for membership.
  • Support sponsorship fulfillment for the Annual Conference and Trade Show.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and manage performance of co-op students, ensuring high-quality member communication benefits and communication materials are delivered.
  • Provide support to the Chief Executive Officer in creating, tracking progress, and evaluating annual member communication, resource and marketing program work plans and budgets.
  • Other duties related to the achievement of BCWWA’s goals and strategies.

About You

  • A university degree in a relevant discipline such as business, social or environmental sciences, communication, or journalism.
  • 3+ years of related experience.
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating marketing and communication plans.
  • Experience integrating email marketing platforms with customer databases.
  • Knowledge of marketing and communication strategies and tactics.
  • Knowledge of best practices for social media technology platforms.
  • Understands design principles and best practices for graphic and web design.
  • Knowledge of web analysis tools and techniques.
  • Strong Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva skills.
  • Proficient with website editing software and applications.
  • Proficient with email marketing applications; strong skills in Constant Contact are an asset.
  • Proficient with managing marketing distribution lists.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills – writes factually accurate and compelling content tailored to the comprehension level of the audience.
  • Strong people management skills – able to inspire and motivate staff, set clear goals, articulate expectations, and hold people accountable for results.
  • Strong project management skills – able to guide projects from inception to completion on schedule and within budget, including the ability to plan, execute, and monitor progress toward achieving project goals.
  • Strong leadership abilities – forward-looking and visionary; deals honestly and fairly with others; sets a positive example and creates followers; shares credit for successes and accepts responsibility for failures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills – listens and understands; shares ideas or concerns with others clearly and effectively.

  • Strong planning skills – always prepared and thinks ahead; anticipates what is needed, takes a proactive approach.

About Us

The BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) is a not-for-profit organization that represents around 4,000 water professionals who are responsible for ensuring safe, sustainable and secure water, sewer and stormwater systems in BC and the Yukon. Our members work every day to keep our water systems clean and safe – from source to tap to drain and back to the environment. They include water and wastewater facility operators, utility managers, engineers, technicians and technologists, consultants, government policy and regulatory staff, backflow assembly testers and cross connection control specialists, researchers, and suppliers. The Association delivers professional development, education, certification, and advocacy programs and services to ensure that our water systems continue to protect public health and the environment.

We have a bright, positive and engaged (but small) team; there’s only one of us in each role! We value “getting the job done” but want to have some fun while we’re at it! Our office is located in Burnaby, within a ten minute walk of Gilmore skytrain station.

Terms and Compensation

The position is full-time (40 hours per week), beginning immediately. The pay scale for the position is $58,000 - 64,000 per year. Minimal travel will be required within BC, including four to five days each May to support our Annual Conference.
