The Vancouver School District is an exciting and dynamic school district which offers a wide range of opportunities for more than 50,000 learners from Kindergarten to adult. Our diverse School District employs almost 8,000 employees which are represented by 14 bargaining units as well as exempt management staff. The Board has a high-profile stature in the British Columbia K-12 Education System, and while many of our stories speak positively of student success and innovative practices, the District also receives criticism from the public, local news agencies and on social media which detract from the good that is happening in our classrooms, schools and District.
We are looking for a Communications and Engagement Advisor who will work within the communications team and be responsible for a wide range of communications and consultation activities, including media relations, social media engagement, public consultation, issues management and internal communications support.
You are a natural born storyteller and adept at using a variety of channels to convey a message to diverse audiences. From video to media pitches, tweet ups to consultation summary reports, you convey a message that is authentic, engaging and informative.
The successful candidate will have a college diploma or degree in communications and have at least five to seven years of experience in communications – preferably in a multi-union public sector environment. Your extensive knowledge of strategic communications planning and public consultation processes will support you in the planning, coordinating, organizing and producing communications collateral and managing events with multiple partners and stakeholders.
The skills and the ability to analyze, problem-solve and mediate difficult situations are invaluable for stakeholder relations, media relations and issues management.
You scrupulous attention to detail will enhance your strong written communication and editing skills while working under tight deadlines to ensure confidential and sensitive information is handled in an appropriate manner. You possess the ability to juggle multiple priorities while working independently and as a team player. It is imperative that you maintain a high degree of judgement and discretion in your decision making process.
Experience with web based applications, digital engagement tools, social medial platforms and content management systems are an asset. As well, you will have experience in the design and implementation of public consultation tools. You have extensive familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite as well as photography and video production. The successful candidate must also be available to do some evening and weekend work.
