What we do

At BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, we’re on a quest to ensure every kid in the province receives the best health care imaginable. As a fundraising organization, we inspire communities and people to support BC Children’s Hospital, along with its world-class research institute, mental health facility and rehabilitation center.

Our work makes a profound difference. From helping get the boldest research ideas off the ground to supporting the most advanced equipment, together we are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in children’s health care. This is no small task—which is why we’re looking for passionate people to join our team and help propel our work forward to power the possible.

What you’ll do

As the Communications Manager, you will build strong relationships with people and teams across BCCHF and will lead the communications strategy for many initiatives.

Reporting to the Director, Marketing & Communications, you will be an integral part of our Brand Strategy Team. You will help expand our content capabilities and create compelling and on-brand communications to amplify our brand story. You will use your keen understanding of how to harness the power of meaningful stories, thought leadership and collaborative relationships with partners to inspire action and accelerate change in child health—ensuring every child in BC and beyond has access to the best health care imaginable.

More specifically, you will:

  • Develop messaging, content for storytelling, media strategies, and strategic writing.
  • Write, edit and disseminate a wide variety of donor-targeted and stakeholder communications, including, but not limited to: magazine and newsletter stories, speaking notes for senior leaders and messaging and briefing notes for key Foundation events.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including donor relations, events, strategic partnerships and others to ensure success through alignment in goals, strategy, messaging and approach.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with representatives within BCCHF, BC Children’s Hospital, PHSA and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute to aid in content development and successful programs.
  • Manage media relations for BCCHF, including writing Foundation news releases, proactively pitching newsworthy story ideas and leading issues management as appropriate.
  • Coach and mentor high-performing team members responsible for providing communications support for various needs and teams across BCCHF.

What you bring

As our ideal candidate, you will bring exceptional and best-in-class skills and experience in virtually all aspects of communications, including messaging strategy, writing, issues management, media relations and stakeholder management. You are in tune with what makes key audiences tick, and you have a passion for uncovering opportunities through innovative strategies and meaningful content that allows you to see the big picture they play in the consumer/donor lifecycle.

In addition, you will bring:

  • Relevant education and minimum of 7+ years experience in strategic communications.
  • Experience as a seasoned project manager and writer of compelling and impactful communications aligned to brand voice.
  • Strong analytical skills and a strategic, inquiring mind.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach and mentor staff.
  • The ability to identify and research compelling story angles for publications, events and other donor/stakeholder communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to foster positive working relationships with diverse internal and external individual stakeholders.
  • Success in leading content and communications functions at complex, dynamic and sophisticated organizations.
  • A natural affinity for our values to Think Big, Lead with Heart and Step Up.

What you can expect

This position is based in our office located in Vancouver, BC. As part of enabling the kind of culture and values that power the possible, we’re committed to creating a flexible workplace experience. We are currently piloting a fully hybrid work environment that allows individuals and teams to split their time between working remotely from home and in-office, with no defined minimum amount of time in-office. It’s a partnership grounded in trust, where working together, team leaders and members determine what activities require on-site presence and schedule time and commitments appropriately.

Throughout the pandemic, BCCHF has committed to prioritizing the health and safety of our team members.  As an organization who advocates for child health, we have implemented a mandatory vaccination policy requiring that all employees who work for BCCHF must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Reasonable accommodations will be made upon request should there be a need for an exemption based on the BC Human Rights Code protected grounds; these will be reviewed and discussed on a case-by-case basis.
