DEPARTMENT: Communications & Public Affairs Department

The Communications & Public Affairs Department supports the objectives of the Strategic Plan of Doctors of BC through communications with members, staff, stakeholders, government, media and the general public.

THE TEAM: Communications & Public Affairs

We provide strategic communications advice and support to the Joint Collaborative Committees and the Divisions of Family Practice, the Doctors of BC Executive Office, boards and departments within the organization, as well as supporting the work of the Board and Representative Assembly. Our activities include media relations; government relations; marketing/branding; and, digital communications. The Communications department also publishes the BC Medical Journal, which is sent to physician members 10 times a year.

THE JOB: Communications Officer, Web

Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, the primary responsibility of the Communications Officer, Web is to develop and execute web strategies for provincial initiatives and with individual, local divisions. In addition to developing the strategic approach, the successful candidate will also implement the strategy, be responsible for website and web content management including copy-writing and images, and ensure the website is optimized for SEO and user experience.

The Communications Officer will create and write a wide range of materials, including articles, stories, and other written materials. In addition, the role also involves providing strategic advice to support local Divisions, the Joint Collaborative Committees central staff teams and the Communications team to achieve organizational goals, when appropriate.

  • Applies problem-solving methodologies and tools to diagnose and solve operational and interpersonal problems.
  • Determines the potential causes of the problem and devises testing methodologies for validation.
  • Shows empathy and objectivity toward individuals involved in the issue.
  • Analyzes multiple alternatives, risks, and benefits for a range of potential solutions.
  • Recommends resource requirements and collaborates with impacted stakeholders.

Strategic Thinking (I):

  • Applies prior knowledge, models, tools, and techniques to analyze and deeply understand issues and recognize connections, patterns, and trends.
  • Determines the direction and develops short-term strategies for programs that are consistent with key organizational priorities and values.
  • Clearly articulates and promotes the significance and impact of employee contributions to promoting and achieving organizational goals, ensuring team objectives are consistent with strategic plan.
  • Understands the position of Doctors of BC in the larger world context, conveying a thorough understanding of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • An undergraduate degree, specialized post-secondary diploma or certification in communications, marketing, digital communications, or a relevant discipline and a minimum of two years of related experience; or an equivalent level of related work experience in lieu of post-secondary education.
  • Experience and excellent grasp of web analytics and SEO.
  • Solid understanding of user experience, design and web development.
  • Experience with website content creation using a content management system, such as Drupal or WordPress; and a willingness to learn other systems.
  • Experience developing web content strategy in connection with the broader communications/strategic goals of the organization and partners.
  • An interest in health care delivery and willingness to develop knowledge of the Doctors of BC vision and its work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to manage competing demands on tight timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving and project management skills.
  • Excellent writing, research and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of web page layout with a minimum of one year of experience in this area.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Photoshop, In-Design and Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS.
