Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Services & Public Affairs, the Community Engagement Leader is responsible for public relations activities to ensure accurate and timely communications between Teck, its employees, the public, the media and various levels of government, and to develop and carry out a variety of public relations programs which include  community engagement activities focused on improving the community’s awareness of who Teck is and what the company does in order to provide a foundation for ongoing community relationships and support.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Implement Teck Sustainability Goals; Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Guidelines; and other strategic plans as applicable to Public Relations team at Trail Operations
  • Undertake community and public relations activities of Trail Operations according to corporate standards and policies
  • Manage Trail Operations’ community investment program and community development projects in accordance with corporate and Trail Operations’ standards, and policies
  • Advise management on the public relations implications of company policies, practices and actions, review proposed changes for probable effects on public opinion, interact with all levels of management to identify and resolve potential public relations problems, and recommend action if applicable
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the media. Responsibilities include acting as a public spokesperson, media interviews, new releases, announcements and overall community and communications planning
  • Develop communication programs to support Teck’s business strategies and objectives including print, radio, web, social media and in-person communications; and manage Trail Operations’ advertising program
  • Build and maintain relationships to support effective engagement with various levels of community, industry-based organizations and government
  • Participate in the strategic planning and goal setting for Commercial Services and Public Affairs organization ensuring goals fit those of the overall organization
  • Manage Public Affairs’ projects, events and tours; and, the Teck Interpretive Centre
  • Contribute to cost control by participating in the development of the Public Affairs budget, monitoring costs and explaining variances
  • Perform other related duties as required

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of corporate communications, media, or public relations
  • Degree or diploma program in the area of communications, journalism, or public relations or equivalent would be an asset
  • Excellent media relations skills with knowledge of media in Canada
  • Excellent writing, editing and content development skills for a variety of purposes including print, web and presentations
  • Ability to set and manage multiple priorities based on relative importance and urgency
  • Ability to communicate effectively and cultivate strong relationships with internal and external communities of interest and to build community engagement
  • Experience establishing relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Participative capacity building skills and knowledge of social risk assessment processes
  • Strong understanding of social media tools and their impact on corporate communications
  • Strong analytical capabilities
