MANAGER, COMMUNICATION SERVICES 

  

A fast growing and diverse multicultural community in the Metro Vancouver area, Surrey is home to 500,000 people. Surrey School District has 74,000 students in our 130 schools, it is the largest school district in the province and one of the largest in Canada. Our school district is innovative, creative and prepares students with the critical skills and compassion that they will need in our rapidly changing and complex world. Due to a retirement, we are seeking a Manager, Communication Services.

 

Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools, the Manager will assume primary responsibility for public relations and for leading the communications program throughout the school district. In close collaboration with the Board of Education and the district’s Executive Committee, the Manager is the chief spokesperson for the School District on day to day issues.

 

The Manager will lead our communications team and the district’s strategic communications plan including online collaboration and social media tools. Responsibilities include media liaison, preparation of district publications and news releases, responding to requests for information, participation with school-based professionals and district staff in responding to critical incidents, and working with senior management and the Board of Trustees to support communication and public relations needs and events.

 

The ideal candidate will have a university degree with an emphasis on communications or public relations as well as experience in educational or other public sector organizations including media relations. Superior interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. The preferred candidate will have an Accreditation in Public Relations and detailed knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation would be an asset.
