JOB OVERVIEW: MANAGER, MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS – Competition ID: 3235

This position reports to the Director, Communications and Media Relations and has four direct BCGEU report. This position works closely with senior leadership, faculty, staff and other internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Media Relations, the Manager, Media and Communications, is responsible for developing a series of comprehensive communications plans to maintain and enhance Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s visibility, branding, positioning, enrolment programs and services, media/community relations and employee relations. This position is responsible for the internal and external communications activities and other related functions which enable the university to optimize student recruitment and retention, promote the university’s departments and programs and reputation as well as increase the level of the public’s institutional awareness. The Manager, Media and Communications, provides advice and guidance on best practices for communicating both written and verbal responses on university matters.

The Manager, Media and Communications, plays a critical role in assisting the Director, Communications and Media Relations, in issues management at KPU. In this capacity, the incumbent works closely with senior leadership to evaluate issues that may impact the university's reputation and to develop plans and strategies to mitigate these impacts. In this role, the incumbent will have access to highly confidential information and will act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, including the Board of Governors, the President and the Vice Presidents.

The Manager, Media and Communications, develops and maintains internal communications plans to ensure the timely and effective dissemination of information to employees at all levels and, as required, to the university’s student body and other internal partners, including the Kwantlen Faculty Association, BC Government Employee’s Union and the Kwantlen Student Association.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or Business with a specialization in Public Relations/Communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 5 years directly related experience in marketing and communications in a managerial role. Previous media experience is essential. Experience working in a post-secondary environment an asset.
• Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

COMPETENCIES
• Demonstrated experience researching, developing, implementing, managing and measuring media and communications activities and functions.
• Ability to interact and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the university as well as with external stakeholders and suppliers in the communities.
• Experience liaising with government officials at a local, municipal and provincial levels and speaking both formally and informally in public forums.
• Ability to quickly and independently evaluate issues for risk and benefit and determine and implement appropriate response.
• Ability to work independently, exercise discretion and sound judgment in dealing with confidential and/or controversial university matters.
• Demonstrated strategic experience and success in managing and developing successful media campaigns, advertising, social media, writing media releases, speaking to media, and other related marketing and communications tasks.
• Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills for a variety of media types (print and electronic) with an eye for detail, design, content and brand.
• Proven ability to plan, schedule and direct staff in a busy environment with priorities of paying attention to detail, optimizing resources and effectively meeting deadlines and project requirements.
• Demonstrated strength in effectively managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Demonstrated proficiency and experience in graphic design and print productions and using PC and Mac computers and publishing software including Photoshop, Word, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and Acrobat.
• Must be a self-starter with proven experience in supervision and administration.
• Ability to travel between campuses is required.

Salary Information
The compensation range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary (as listed above) for a position. Approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and approximately halfway of the salary range for a job. Annual salary increases are available through participation in the Administrative Performance Management program
