Reporting to the manager, strategic communications, the senior communications advisor – issues management and media relations is responsible for day-to-day management of the port authority’s media relations program including media monitoring, development and implementation of media relations plans, and issues management. The senior communications advisor identifies key opportunities to increase awareness of the port authority’s role, mandate and approach to sustainability, as well as the organization’s projects and initiatives. This position also provides strategic advice and oversight for issues management approaches. This role works closely with departments across the organization to keep apprised of initiatives and to identify and mitigate any potential reputational risks.

This role will:

  • Manage day-to-day media relations activities
  • Take and track calls from the media, assessing and recommending the appropriate response
  • Analyze information, data and statistics regarding media requests, coverage and interviews for media evaluation system
  • Coordinate interviews with spokespeople or act as spokesperson, as appropriate
  • Train spokespeople and provide general media awareness training to port authority employees
  • Prepare spokespeople for interviews and provide feedback afterwards
  • Write a variety of strategic communication documents including media releases, key messages, background materials, Q and As and public bulletins
  • Proactively identify risks, anticipate and manage issues effectively, and develop management strategies to address them
  • Perform other assigned duties as required

The successful candidate will have a university degree majoring in communications, journalism, political science, or another acceptable degree, along with a minimum four years of experience in media relations, issues management and strategic communications in a public relations agency or corporate environment. Must have excellent writing and editing skills, with knowledge of Canadian Press standards. Must have proficiency in MS Office.

This position is ideal for a self-motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, sound judgment, tact, diplomacy and the ability to liaise confidently, effectively and positively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Must have an excellent command of the English language and effective writing, editing and story-telling skills, with an ability to synthesize complex information from diverse sources into simplified language for a range of audiences. This person will have strong critical thinking, problem-solving, time-management, and strategic awareness skills with the ability to make informed strategic recommendations and manage multiple priorities under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Must be able to work independently, pitch in willingly, represent the port authority professionally and with diplomacy, and also be a collaborative and accountable team player who demonstrates professionalism, tact and the ability to liaise effectively.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal working conditions. Flexibility to occasionally respond to issues during non-working hours.
