ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

Through Council’s Strategic Plan, Council’s Vision is to be “The Healthiest Small City in the World” and they have identified five key priorities to support this vision and to guide their work:  a City for People, a Resilient City, a Vibrant City, a Connected City, and a Prosperous City.  The Strategic Plan is intended to support Council’s decision-making for future initiatives, projects, and plans, and provides guidance to City staff, partners and the community.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, the Senior Manager, Communications and Engagement is responsible for developing, implementing, and directing the communications, media relations, issues management and civic engagement strategies, functions, and programs of the City. The Senior Manager leads the team responsible for communications and engagement across the City’s departments, including providing strategic and tactical communications advice; developing and managing communication strategies, plans, and policies; overseeing content development for communications channels; directing and managing communications to support issues management and emergency/incident events; and building relationships in support of the Council and City priorities. This integral position provides a bridge between the City’s communication and civic engagement activities, internal and external stakeholders, and the delivery of services and initiatives.

This is an exciting opportunity for a progressive and astute communications professional who is passionate about local government and civic engagement. The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a related field (public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or media operations), with at least 10 years of strategic communications and public engagement experience.  The successful candidate will have excellent communications, project management, and leadership attributes as well as proven interpersonal and management skills with the ability to guide and direct a team building a cohesive and collaborative work environment. The role requires political acumen and problem-solving skills, delivered with a high degree of tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to complex civic initiatives and issues.
