The City of Abbotsford has an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to join our team as a Communications Officer. This is a 1-year temporary full-time position (with the potential for extension).  Reporting to the Communications and Public Relations Manager and working in the Executive Office, you will provide communications and public relations support to Mayor, Council and the City of Abbotsford as we continue to grow as the cultural and economic Hub of the Fraser Valley.

Our organization depends on the strength of relationship building and being effective and diplomatic in interactions with key stakeholders, fellow staff members and the public. You will work to ensure the Mayor and Council’s vision for Abbotsford is communicated across a diverse stakeholder group through a multitude of communication channels.

Writing blog posts, Council briefs, newsletters and online content, and social media posts, as well as attending Council meetings and photographing events are key responsibilities of this role. The incumbent will be a highly efficient self-starter who values a team environment, and has great attention to detail. The ability to manage a busy and interesting workload, with potentially conflicting priorities, while providing excellent customer service is essential to the role. Experience in journalism and photography, and having other language skills to help support Abbotsford’s diverse population is a bonus. The ability to work a variable work schedule involving evenings and weekends is required for this role.

As the ideal candidate, you will have:

  • A university degree in Journalism, Communications, or Public Relations. Courses in Public Administration or Political Science will be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of one (1) year – two (2) years related experience in a newsroom or government setting, with a sound working knowledge of professional communication techniques and practices;
  • Professional photo journalism skills and the ability to utilize basics of Adobe design programs; and
  • Experience in journalism, communications, public affairs, or related political science field, knowledge of or experience with the legislative process and the Local Government Act.
