Have you ever heard a story and thought, “I can relate to that” or “That’s exactly what I needed to hear today.”? The truth is, we all have a story to share. Heartfelt stories, courageous stories, embarrassing stories and stories that still make you laugh, even 10 years down the road.

Every IABC/BC member shapes our chapter with their unique story, and because March is IABC’s #MemberMonth—a month to celebrate the amazing people behind our chapter—we’re sharing inspiring stories about the true value of IABC/BC from members who have advanced their careers, made lifelong connections across the globe, found their purpose, cultivated networks and built skills in areas that were unfamiliar.

Denisa OrlandeaAn impression worth making

Our Career Development Director, Denisa Orlandea moved her career forward with the support of IABC when another IABC member helped her to land her dream job: “I pulled out my resume, very shyly, and asked her to look at it. What she said to me that day ended up being just the kick I needed to move forward in my search.”

Delivering a healthy career change

When Sheryl Gray realized she wanted to work in communications, she showed up at an IABC/BC committee meeting for volunteers and started writing profiles for the chapter newsletter. She later joined our board of directors.

“I quickly realized that IABC was a giant group of professional communicators at all levels of their careers…I found myself working alongside and meeting people who had been working in communications a long time, and whom I actually liked!”

Ryan PaulsonFinding that perfect fit

When Ryan Paulson, wanted to make a move to the private sector he joined IABC/BC and volunteered on various committees. Through volunteering, he was able to work on projects that he didn’t typically get to do in his day-to-day work, and with the help of his IABC mentor, he realized what he wanted to focus on in his career.

“I transitioned into the sponsorship function, becoming the sponsorship director on the board. The sponsorship piece was completely new to me. It was just such a great learning experience, and I really started to hone in on marketing communications as an area of focus.”
