Panelists:
Terri Griffith is a Professor and Keith Beedie Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business. She spent two decades in the Silicon Valley before moving to Canada. She was honoured in 2012 as a Woman of Influence by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Terri helps her students and organizations accelerate performance and prepare for the futures of work. She brings energy and evidence-based innovation to organizational design and technology management through her research, teaching, speaking, and writing. Her current research focuses on remote and hybrid work strategies, especially the bottom-up application of automation and artificial intelligence.
Mark Schmidt is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on developing faster algorithms for large-scale machine learning, and exploring applications of machine learning. He is a Canada Research Chair, Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, CIFAR Canada AI Chair with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), and was awarded the 2018 SIAM/MOS Lagrange Prize in Continuous Optimization with Nicolas Le Roux and Francis Bach.
Vered Shwartz is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, and a CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute. Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) and the University of Washington. Vered’s research focuses on natural language processing, with the fundamental goal of building models capable of human-level understanding of natural language. Her research involves different problems in computational semantics and pragmatics, and commonsense reasoning. In particular, she is working on learning to uncover implicit meaning (“reading between the lines”), which is abundant in human speech, and on developing machines with advanced reasoning skills.
