Why Volunteer?

Aside from meeting people, developing professionally and having fun, our volunteers can also take advantage of the following benefits:

Volunteer Recognition Event
You’re invited! Once the volunteering year winds down in June, we take the opportunity to celebrate all IABC/BC volunteer contributions at a recognition event just for you.

President’s Awards
Could you be the next “Volunteer of the Year” or “Outstanding New Volunteer”? Absolutely! Each year, we honour two volunteers who have made the greatest impact on the chapter or have made their mark by demonstrating above and beyond expectations on a particular task, project or event. Nominations are solicited each spring and the awards are given out at the end of the IABC/BC year.

Career Development
Many volunteers cite networking and professional development as their reasons for volunteering. Connect with the communications professionals on your volunteer team, as well as your committee director or volunteer leader to get your questions answered and meet more people in your industry.

Leadership Development
Interested in being on the board some day? Talk to your committee director or volunteer leader, or any member of the IABC/BC executive, so they can look out for opportunities for you to take on a leadership role.

Letter to Employer or Letter of Reference
On request, Volunteer Services (and/or your volunteer leader) will send your employer a letter of recommendation, or write you a general letter of reference based on your volunteer work with IABC/BC. Contact Volunteer Services.

Other Benefits
Some volunteer roles offer additional benefits due to the nature of the work being done. For example, at one of the previous International Conferences, volunteer members were provided with the opportunity to attend professional development sessions in exchange for volunteering their time to help run the conference.

Costs
As a not-for-profit association, IABC/BC cannot accommodate food, parking, transportation and event costs incurred by volunteers. However, volunteers will be reimbursed for any pre-approved out-of-pocket expenses paid for by them on behalf of the chapter.
